AutoVOD vs Opus Clip

Compare AutoVOD and Opus Clip on livestream capture, AI clips, virality scores, storage, and pricing — and who each tool is actually for.

September 17, 2026

Opus Clip and AutoVOD both turn a long video into short clips. They are not the same job.

Opus Clip is a repurposing editor. You bring a finished YouTube video or an upload, ClipAnything finds moments, and you export vertical shorts with captions and a virality score.

AutoVOD is a livestream pipeline. It records Twitch, YouTube, Kick, and Rumble when a channel goes live, keeps the VOD in a library, ranks highlights, reframes them for phones, and can queue YouTube or TikTok posts — including a human approval gate.

If your source is a podcast or webinar already sitting on YouTube, Opus Clip is built for that. If your source is a three-hour stream that Twitch will delete in a week, AutoVOD is built for that.

The source problem

Opus Clip assumes you already have the file. AutoVOD assumes you might not.

Twitch still deletes past broadcasts after 7 days for most streamers, 14 days for Affiliates, and 60 days for Partners. Kick and Rumble are not YouTube URLs. A tool that only imports YouTube cannot save a stream that never becomes a public VOD you remember to download.

AutoVOD live downloaders watch a username and record when that channel goes live. The file lands in your library. You can also paste a Twitch, YouTube, Kick, or Rumble URL for a one-off. That is the difference between “repurpose what you already published” and “do not lose the broadcast.”

Opus Clip’s free tier is limited to YouTube and local imports. Fine for a weekly podcast. A dead end if the talent is live on Twitch four nights a week.

How each tool picks clips

Opus Clip — ClipAnything. It looks at spoken words, visual objects, sound, and emotion. That is the right model when a moment is visual: a silent reaction, a sports play, a cutaway that the transcript never mentions. You can point it at a YouTube URL and get a stack of candidates with animated captions and optional AI B-roll. Paid plans add a virality score trained against a large set of clips that already performed.

AutoVOD — transcribe, then rank. Clip Generator runs Whisper, measures audio energy per segment, and asks an LLM to score windows the way a chat-aware editor would. Content is weighted heavier than volume, so a quiet quotable line can beat a loud nothing. Each clip comes back with a 1–10 virality score, a title, and suggested platforms. Scoring is part of the clip job — not a paid add-on and not hidden on the free plan.

What AutoVOD will miss: purely visual beats with no audio cue. What Opus will not do: sit on a Twitch username and start clipping when the stream ends.

Tune AutoVOD with clip length, count, language, and a custom prompt (“prioritise clutches over chat roasts”). Attach that config to a live downloader or a workflow so every future stream uses the same taste.

Shorts, captions, and posting

Both tools exist to ship 9:16.

Opus Clip reframes speakers, burns animated captions, can insert AI B-roll, and offers 1-click export or autopost. It is in the TikTok App Center. The editor, B-roll, and extra aspect ratios sit on paid tiers. Free exports are watermarked and you cannot edit them.

AutoVOD’s Shorts Creator takes a clip (or a download) and outputs 1080×1920 with optional face-aware crop, a hook headline, and word-level captions (bold, minimal, or karaoke), including profanity masking on the burned-in text. Free-tier shorts can carry a watermark; paid plans do not.

Posting on AutoVOD is not a separate SaaS. Connect YouTube or TikTok under Automation, then schedule from the library or as the last step of a workflow. The useful pattern is:

live downloader → generate clips → generate shorts → approve → upload

Set a minimum virality score on the approval gate so a 4 never reaches your inbox. Space uploads so six shorts do not post in the same minute. Details: automate clips to YouTube.

Opus is faster if you already have one long file and want a polished vertical cut tonight. AutoVOD is faster across a stream week, because capture, ranking, shorts, and posting are one pipeline.

Storage and what “free” actually means

Opus Clip’s free plan is a demo of the product, not a small version of it:

  • 60 credits per month (1 credit = 1 minute processed) — this number is real
  • Watermarked exports
  • No editing
  • Clips expire after 3 days
  • No virality score
  • YouTube and local imports only

AutoVOD’s free plan is small but it is the same product:

  • 50 credits per month, no card
  • 10 GB library that does not expire after three days
  • 2 live downloaders
  • Clip generation includes virality scores
  • Shorts may be watermarked until you upgrade

If you are testing whether AI clips are useful, a three-day expiry is a problem: you cannot sit on last Tuesday’s VOD until Thursday’s posting slot. AutoVOD keeps the file until you delete it or hit quota.

Pricing

Credits are not comparable one-for-one. Opus Clip charges per minute of source video. AutoVOD charges per job (download, clip run, short, upload), not per hour of VOD. A four-hour stream is 240 Opus credits. On AutoVOD it is one recording plus one clip job, then shorts on the keepers.

Starter$15/mo150 credits, virality score, animated captions, auto-post, no watermark
Pro$29/mo or $174/year3,600 credits/year, team workspace, multiple aspect ratios

Starter’s 150 minutes is one long podcast, or a fraction of one stream week. Pro’s annual credit pool is 3,600 minutes — about 60 hours of source across a year.

AutoVOD (full pricing)

Pro$29.99/mo5,500 credits/mo, 2 TB, 10 live downloaders, priority processing

AutoVOD Basic undercuts Opus Starter on price and includes persistent storage plus live recording. AutoVOD Pro is about the same monthly sticker as Opus Pro, with a credit pool sized for many streams rather than minutes of a single file. Both have a 7-day Pro-style trial path; AutoVOD’s paid trial is on Basic and Pro from pricing.

Who should use which

Pick Opus Clip if you convert podcasts, webinars, or finished YouTube videos into Shorts, you want ClipAnything’s visual/emotion pass and AI B-roll, and you do not need to record livestreams. That is the use case they advertise, and it is real.

Pick AutoVOD if you (or the talent you clip) go live on Twitch, YouTube, Kick, or Rumble; you need the file saved before the platform dumps it; you want ranked clips in a library you still own next week; and you want a workflow from live to scheduled posts with an approval step.

A clipping agency or a streamer posting 5–15 shorts a week from their own VODs is AutoVOD’s default customer. A course creator turning a two-hour webinar into ten talking-head Shorts is Opus Clip’s.

You can use both. Record and archive on AutoVOD, export a VOD, run it through Opus if you want their caption and B-roll pass. Most people will not: the cost of two subscriptions only pays off if you actually use both editors.
